Stranded in the Middle of Nowhere… or Eating Like Royalty?

KATEMBE RESTO

When people hear “private island in the middle of nowhere,” they imagine survival mode: limited ingredients, repetitive meals, and simple dishes on repeat. That was exactly my expectation before staying at Katembe Private Island in Raja Ampat. But the reality was completely different. I have rarely eaten this well, even in the city.

What It’s Really Like to Eat on a Remote Island

Life on a “stranded” island didn’t mean starvation or compromise. Instead, it meant thoughtfully prepared meals, three times a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Each dish felt intentional, fresh, and surprisingly diverse. Nothing was repetitive, and every day brought something new.

Authentic Indonesian Cuisine, Done Right

Rather than relying on standard dishes like nasi goreng or mie goreng, the chefs focused on authentic Indonesian cuisine.

Meals included:

  • Gado-Gado with rich peanut sauce
  • Comforting Soto Betawi
  • Crispy Lumpia Sayur
  • Smoky Seafood Bakar
  • Perfectly fried Ikan Goreng

Every dish was full of flavor and prepared with care, making each meal feel like a culinary experience rather than just daily sustenance.

Afternoon Snacks with a View

Afternoons quickly became a highlight of the day. Snacks were served with tea or coffee, perfectly timed for sunset. Sitting on the restaurant balcony, watching the sky change colors while enjoying freshly prepared bites, created a moment that felt peaceful rather than isolated.

Desserts That Feel Like a Luxury Experience

And then came the desserts. Always the cherry on top, both literally and figuratively. Instead of simple fruit platters, meals often ended with beautifully prepared desserts that felt like part of a full dining experience. It was the kind of moment that made you pause and think, “Wait… we’re really on a remote island?”

All-Inclusive Dining with No Hidden Costs

One of the most surprising parts of the experience was that everything was included.

There were:

  • No hidden fees
  • No extra charges for special meals
  • No premium menu upsells

All meals, snacks, and desserts were part of the package, making the experience feel even more indulgent and stress-free.

International Flavors with a Local Twist

In addition to Indonesian dishes, the chefs also prepared Chinese, Western, and occasionally European-inspired meals.

These weren’t exact replicas, but creative interpretations adapted to the island setting, which made them even more unique and memorable.

Is Food Really a Concern on a Remote Island?

If you think staying in the middle of nowhere means sacrificing comfort, especially when it comes to food, this experience proves otherwise.

At Katembe, being far away from everything doesn’t mean less.

Final Thoughts: Remote Travel Can Be Surprisingly Luxurious

Waking up to the ocean, enjoying thoughtfully prepared meals, and ending the day with dessert showed me something unexpected:

Sometimes, the most remote destinations offer the richest experiences.
